An idyllic haven on Mexico's Caribbean coast reopens its doors

Set on 200 acres of the Caribbean coast of Mexico, Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya is the original hideaway, steeped in tradition and nature. Built to “align with the sacred geometry of the Mayan builders” and surrounded by dense jungle and white sand beaches, the resort recently reopened its doors after an extensive renovation led by Tara Bernerd and Partners. Inspired by local materials, ancient rituals, and Belmond’s “slow luxury” philosophy, the acclaimed design studio re-imagined the hotel’s interiors—which include four dining venues, an indoor-outdoor spa, and 72 rooms and suites—to prioritize tranquility, formal purity, and craftsmanship. Naturally, AXOR was chosen for the bathrooms.

Natural materials, modern simplicity

Bernerd's essential yet grounded interior design is defined by natural, local materials in earthy tones – dark wood, geometric tiles, and soft plaster – brought to life with refreshing touches of yellow, green, and blue. Linen textiles, rattan chairs, and lush greenery add a sense of warmth and meticulous detail. With a distinct Mexican design, Bernerd remains true to Maroma's roots while introducing a degree of minimalism that makes each space feel modern, elegant, and inviting.

With four bedrooms, expansive ocean views, and a private swimming pool, Villa Maroma represents the hotel’s vision of hospitality in its full breadth and intimacy. Hand-carved armchairs, high thatched ceilings, and a rich textile palette define the common areas. The bathroom continues this warm and inviting atmosphere through a palette of terracotta cladding, soothing green tones, and marble.

AXOR Montreux: Timeless Craftsmanship in the Bathroom

In the bathroom, Bernerd completes the villa's material design with a careful selection of AXOR Montreux items: a two-handle freestanding bathtub mixer fills the tub, ornate three-hole mixers complement the washbasins, and a Raindance E 240 1jet shower head together with a hand shower serve the shower area. A variety of accessories from the collection completes the space. AXOR Montreux, elegant and timeless, gives the space a sense of rich details and tradition, while the Brushed Nickel finish complements the room's palette with a radiant glow.

A resort worthy of the name

Maroma stands out for its focus on immersive experiences – cultural, natural, and deeply personal. Whether through its reverence for Mayan heritage, its connection to the jungle and the sea, or the tranquil rituals performed in the spa and suites, the resort invites guests to slow down and reconnect. In the bathrooms, AXOR Montreux becomes part of this narrative, where the balance between traditional craftsmanship and elegance reinforces a philosophy rooted in heritage and modern refinement. The result is a sanctuary that offers a rare kind of luxury – slow, thoughtful, and interwoven with its surroundings.
