Jean-Marie Massaud - Jean-Marie Massaud

בהשראת הסביבה

Jean-Marie Massaud is a French architect and designer with a clear and inspiring design vision: to create spaces that enhance people's lives through harmony between humanity, nature, and technology. He is one of the most prominent creators in contemporary French design—an architect and designer who seeks neither a "gimmick" nor a "trend," but a complete human experience. For him, nature is not merely an aesthetic inspiration, but a system of intelligence: proportions, flow, utility, and emotion. This is why his works—from products to architecture—always feel like a rare balance between simplicity, elegance, and inner peace. Massaud operates from a deep understanding that every project is a response to a broader cultural and social context; he defines design as a way to manage the complexities of that context—culture, ecology, economy—and synthesize a simple yet meaningful solution.

Jean-Marie Massaud: Inspired by the environment

Massaud was born in 1966 in Toulouse, in the south of France, where he absorbed the blend of rich cultural heritage and technological innovation, which deeply influenced his work over the years. Massaud began his academic path studying industrial design in Paris, graduating from ENSCI-Les Ateliers (a leading industrial design school) in 1990. His professional journey actually began in Hong Kong—an experience that provided him with an early global perspective on culture, materials, and innovation. In 2000, together with his architectural partner Daniel Pouzet, he established Studio Massaud in Paris—a multidisciplinary studio that works across diverse scales and with major international brands (including Cacharel, Foscarini, Lancôme, Renault, and Toyota). Since then, he has worked on a wide spectrum of projects: from designing furniture and everyday accessories to creating architectural infrastructure and large-scale conceptual frameworks. His work is characterized by a search for solutions that combine elegance, lifestyle, and a natural connection to the environment, all within an approach aimed at enhancing the human experience.
International recognition soon followed: Massaud “regularly wins prestigious design awards”—including “Designer of the Year” (2007, 2009), the Wallpaper Design Award (2014), and the Interior Innovation Award (2015). These awards are not just certificates of honor—they are testament to the fact that his language succeeds in being simultaneously sensitive, functional, and groundbreaking.

Creating better living spaces

Jean-Marie Massaud creates a style that is unmistakable. Through it, the French AXOR designer sets himself a goal: to step away from the fast-paced daily life and the constant stream of stimuli that defines people more than ever. The designer and architect draws inspiration from the beauty and harmony of our blue planet. Massaud opposes "decadent design," which focuses all its energy on styling alone. Instead, he seeks to touch people holistically—and create better living spaces.

Jean-Marie Massaud presents a particularly broad spectrum in his work—from designing objects to large-scale architectural projects, from concept cars to the idea of a flying hotel, from one-off creations to serial products. Since 2010 at the latest, Massaud has been known worldwide for his "Estado Omnilife" design. The impressive football stadium near the Mexican city of Guadalajara is designed with inspiration from a volcano.

Bathroom as a sanctuary

Massaud’s relationship with the AXOR brand began as a deep design partnership with the company leading the world of luxury bathroom products. Through his involvement with AXOR, Massaud aspires to create bathroom spaces that are not merely functional, but establish a realm of calm, serenity, and the poetics of water. In his projects for AXOR, he focuses on creating experiences that connect to human emotion and deepen the bond between the user and their space.
One of the ideas most identified with Massaud is his view of the bathroom as a space for healing, slowing down, and returning to the basics. To him, this is a place to step away from a demanding, fast-paced life—and encounter material, silence, and water as a soothing sensory experience. Not “just another functional room,” but a personal landscape.
This vision took shape as early as 2005, when Massaud created the “bathroom of the future” as part of the AXOR WaterDream—an organic landscape of sorts. From this vision, the AXOR Massaud bathroom collection was born: a world where faucets can become waterfalls, and bathtubs can become lakes.

Massaud also designed the bathroom of the future, which took shape in 2005 as part of the AXOR WaterDream—as an organic landscape. Out of this vision, the AXOR Massaud bathroom collection was born. In his collection, AXOR designer Massaud allows waterfalls to bubble out of faucets and bathtubs to become lakes. It is hard to find a more sensual staging of the element of water.

AXOR Massaud - In Harmony with Nature

In the AXOR Massaud collection, Massaud expresses a vision of "minimalism in harmony with nature," driven by a desire to integrate the human and natural environments into the bathing experience. The collection features a water flow reminiscent of a natural waterfall, and the faucets themselves appear as organic elements that flow into the space. The clean, refined lines of the faucets evoke a stylized blade of grass, requiring minimal presence while enhancing the essence of the flow.
In Massaud's own words: he developed a concept where the functional components "disappear" into the design landscape, so that the faucet becomes a shelf—a place to set a ring, a glass of wine, or a macaron—and the water itself becomes a waterfall that descends into a point of calm and connection with the body and soul. In this style, the bathroom is not just a functional space, but a space for a holistic experience for the body and mind.
The series also incorporates solutions for the washbasin, bathtub, and shower, alongside complementary accessories, and offers a design language that balances organicism with clean geometric form, with water flowing at an economical rate of 4 liters per minute—which sharpens the sense of efficiency and natural elegance of the space.

AXOR Edge - A jewel in the bathroom

In the AXOR Edge collection, Jean-Marie explores the world of luxury through a formal language that is clean yet rich in details based on geometry and exceptional precision. The collection presents a fusion of sharp-edged cubic forms and polished surfaces, highlighting the contrast between light and shadow, glossy finishes and delicate textures, with every detail refined to micron-level precision.
The faucets and fixtures in the collection are designed as architectural sculptures, with an emphasis on straight, precise lines and the use of an advanced diamond-cutting process adapted from the aerospace and optics industries to create incredibly brilliant and accurate surfaces. The result is objects that are not just faucets, but functional jewelry for the bathroom; each item is a creation that balances art with practical design.
In Massaud’s view, luxury is not merely a state of expensive material or a glittering surface, but an idea that begins with emotion: “When quality is a must, when capabilities are taken for granted, then emotion must take precedence” – and this is expressed in every piece of the collection, which strives to transform an everyday faucet into a personal object that shares intimacy in the user’s life.
In both cases—whether in collections rooted in nature or those emphasizing formal luxury—Massaud brings his world into the bathroom, imbuing this space with a new quality of calm, touch, and personal experience that directs and connects water, the individual, and design.
